Clinicians in Nigeria have launched a six-point approach to combat the nation’s high levels of maternal mortality.

The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) says that on its road to establishing a five-year strategic development plan sometime in 2017, it is focusing on six key themes that will enable it to prioritise effectively.

Governance is chief among these elements, alongside human resource development, service delivery, finance, research innovation and knowledge management.

According to Nigeria’s Daily Times, the plan was launched by SOGON president Dr Fred Achem yesterday (November 20th). He confirmed that reducing maternal deaths is considered a top priority for the society.

In his address at the start of the 48th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the society, Dr Achem also called on president Goodluck Jonathan to sign the new National Health Bill into law.

He explained that the legislation will promote primary healthcare in the nation and help to drive moves to improve healthcare delivery.
