Nigerian Aids campaigners help bail gay rights activists

A representative from a Nigerian organisation that offers counsel for those affected by HIV and Aids has revealed it is helping bail gay rights campaigners who have been arrested because of a new law.

The Nigerian government recently signed a bill that made it illegal to file for same-sex marriage or to become a member of a pro-gay organisation, reports This Day Live.

Officials from the UK, the US and Canada have strongly condemned the law, but since it was passed the police have reportedly compiled a list of 168 men, whom they have permission to arrest.

US secretary of state John Kerry said the measures "dangerously restrict freedom of expression".

However, sexual health workers are becoming increasingly worried that this victimisation of homosexuals in Nigeria could have serious consequences for initiatives designed to battle HIV and Aids.

Religious leaders in the country have come out to support the law, claiming those countries that have criticised it are culturally incompatible with Nigeria.
