A member of the Scottish Parliament is urging ministers to make sanitary products free for women who need them.

Monica Lennon, Labour spokesperson for inequalities, has said that access to these items should be “a basic right”. She has called for universities, schools and colleges to supply free sanitary products in their female toilets. These would not be available to just students and anyone who wanted to take these items home would be able to request more from the student union.

Ms Lennon’s call comes after the Scottish government announced a six-month pilot project in the city of Aberdeen, which would provide free items to at least 1,000 women and girls from low-income households.

A consultation on a member’s bill, launched by Ms Lennon, would allow ministers to introduce the free provision of sanitary products. She has said that although the products would be available to anyone who wanted them, most women would keep buying their preferred brands.ADNFCR-2094-ID-801838909-ADNFCR
