Contraception restrictions ‘affect 3.9 million women in England’

A new report has found that 3.9 million women in England live in areas with some form of restriction on access to contraception, either due to age or place of residency.

The UK’s Advisory Group on Contraception’s (AGC) report, ‘Private Lives, Public Health: The changing shape of contraceptive services in England post-2013’, also found that more than one in six local authorities (16 per cent) decreased their spending on contraceptive services during the financial year 2015/16 as a result of the unexpected £200 million in-year cut to public health budgets in June 2015.

According to the report, there is wide variation in local authorities’ willingness to pay for contraceptive care for their residents by providers located in other local authorities, with nearly half (46 per cent) of councils saying they never pay invoices received for contraceptive services delivered out of area.

The AGC said it is concerned that “the lack of national focus on the impact of sustained cuts to public health budgets, broader local authority funding, and the squeeze on general practice will affect more and more women’s access to contraception”.ADNFCR-2094-ID-801830331-ADNFCR
