Tanzanian newspaper calls for end to under-age marriages

Tanzanian publication the Daily News has issued an editorial calling for under-age marriages in the country to be outlawed.

The newspaper said, amid recent press reports, that more and more young girls were dropping out of school to get married and state progress to try to eradicate the practice is "painfully slow".

It states that the statutory age of marriage in Tanzania of 16 is "inappropriate", but in some cases, girls as young as 14 are being wed with their parents' consent.

According to the Daily News, under-age marriages are one of the primary causes of pregnancy complications as a girl of 16 is not always "biologically ripe" to bring a child into the world.

The unfortunate scenario is leading to many cases of under-age mothers, broken marriages and obstetric fistula in Tanzania stated the newspaper.

Obstetric fistula, the publication added, leaves a woman with extensive tissue damage to her birth canal.
